Managing stress is not only important for your mental health but also physical health. With how much time we spend working in our lives, learning how to manage work stress is going to be key to helping us feel more mentally and physically healthy. As chemical recruiters, we are aware of and have heard about the demands and pressures that the industry can invoke.

Identify the stressors

Knowing what triggers your stress will help with coping and reducing it. Look for patterns or common stressors. Maybe it is the environment, the tasks, disorganization, etc. While these activities are not always things that can be completely eliminated, once the stressor is identified, you can prepare or use coping mechanisms to better handle these situations in the future.

Discover what works best for you

Each person is going to manage their stress differently. Some people may find it helpful to start the day off with low stress and ease into it through the day while others work best starting with the biggest project first to get it out of the way. Establish your day towards what style works best for you. Consider this in your commute to and from work as well. Use this time to prepare for the day and plan for what is ahead. Allow yourself to decompress after work in a way that works best for you. If you have a hobby that helps relieve stress, plan for that. If you need a moment to take a breath after a long day before being around family or friends after work, allow yourself that time. Be thoughtful with your time throughout the day to set yourself up for success. If you have a big project that you know will be stressful, prepare for that ahead of time in a way that works best for you.

Stress relievers to try

  • Reduce clutter
  • Improve/create a calming environment
  • Exercise
  • Read
  • Plan to do your favorite hobby after work
  • Listen to music- Make a special playlist to boost your mood
  • Go for a walk on your lunch break
  • Build relationships with coworkers- lean on your team
  • Prioritize a positive mindset- Actively teach yourself to think positive thoughts
  • Take a moment to breath
  • Establish boundaries with technology- take a break from phone and email outside of work

Work can be stressful but we should be mindful to make sure it does not damage mental or physical health. Getting a grasp of what causes the stress, finding a way to best manage that stress, planning for it, and taking action to relieve the stress are steps that need to be considered in stress management.
