We’ve all heard the importance of self-love. Happiness starts with self-love and that includes in the workplace. Self-love is the regard for one’s happiness and can be seen in four acts: self-awareness, self-worth, self-esteem, and self-care. What do these acts mean and how can they help in the workplace?

Self-awareness

This is an awareness of how your thoughts affect your emotions and how you act based on those emotions. Self-awareness will help you understand what triggers you to feel certain emotions and how to handle and process those feelings. These can be negative or positive emotions. A way to promote self-awareness is to keep a journal. Devote a journal to your work. Keep track of your thoughts and emotions throughout the day and what triggered those responses- both positive and negative. This will give you perspective to look back on to see what went well and what could have gone better. It can bring awareness to thought patterns through different situations and how they affect your emotions and actions.

Self-worth

By nature, we are programmed to see the negative and project that onto ourselves. Even though it can be easy to get wrapped up in the negative, work towards valuing the good things about you. Look in the mirror and discover the potential you have. You are full of talent and strengths. Promote the feeling of self-worth by creating time to devote time to the projects that allow you to use your strengths. This could be signing up to work on a project that challenges you to use your talents. Sign up for certifications or classes to sharpen your skills even more. Find a mentor who can help guide and advise you on how to best use your skills. Identify your strengths, dive deeper into them, and be proud of them.

Self-esteem

This one goes hand in hand with self-worth. To establish self-esteem, one must work towards a high sense of self-worth. Self-esteem is related to the qualities we possess and our achievements. Self-worth can have more visual results while self-esteem is felt within. To improve self-esteem, you must improve your self-worth. Be your own number-one supporter. If you achieve something, be proud. Keep a list of your professional accomplishments and continue to add to it throughout your career. This can allow you to visually see the impact and value you have had on your company. Give yourself permission to celebrate all wins, the big and the small.

Self-care

When we think of self-care, we often think of it from a physical aspect, but it does not have to only be physical. Self-care can take many forms. Forms of self-care while working can be turning on a podcast or music that you enjoy while you work. Take time to make or pack a lunch that you are excited to eat. If you are extroverted, it can be giving yourself time to interact with your coworkers. In this case, see how you can incorporate more teamwork into your day. If you are more introverted, self-care can be giving yourself the time and space you need. Incorporate the things that make you feel good. Go for a walk on your lunch break. Exercise before work. Put a picture of your family, kids, pet, or favorite place in your space or on your computer background to make you smile throughout the day. Make an effort to incorporate those “feel good” things into each day.

Self-love is one of the keys to happiness. Actively working towards self-awareness, self-worth, self-esteem, and self-care can promote a healthier and more enjoyable work experience.
