Spring is in the air and it is the perfect time to update your resume. It is recommended that you update your resume once or twice a year. That way when or if you need it, your resume will be up to date with your recent accomplishments and you will not have to try to pull from memory remembering what happened in the past. Set time aside each year to dust off your resume and do some Spring cleaning. Use the bullet points as tips and checkpoints:
- Add any new certifications or skills.
- Make sure your contact information is correct. Make any changes to phone numbers, emails, or addresses if necessary.
- If you are actively searching for a new job, update your summary to include any relevant experience or skills for the position you are searching for.
- Keywords. Keywords. These are what will grab a hiring manager or recruiter’s attention when scanning through your resume. Think of what words might be vital to the role you play or what would be important to the job you’re searching for. For example: Lean Six Sigma, scale-up, project management, organic chemistry, maintenance, tolling, batch manufacturing, etc.
- Update work experience including responsibilities and achievements. Include any quantifiable data to “show” your work and impact.
- If you have gained additional certifications or education, make sure to include those.
- If you include your LinkedIn profile link, make sure that your profile is also up to date.
- Proofread. Go through your resume thoroughly to make sure there are no spelling or grammar mistakes. Ask someone to double-check it for you as well.
Even if you are not actively seeking a new job, it is still a good idea to keep your resume up to date. You never know when an opportunity will pop up that you can not pass on. It can also be a powerful tool for performance reviews. Or a promotion may become available at work in which you can submit your application if you have your resume ready. Setting aside an hour or less time once or twice a year to update your resume will save you time when it comes time and give you a more powerful career tool when it is time to put it to use.
