The Danish-Swedish Farmdog, a compact working dog also known as the “Little Big Dog” and originally called the Danish Pinscher, became the 202nd breed to be recognized by the American Kennel Club in 2025 after 14 years in the AKC FSS (Foundation Stock Services) Program.
As a part of the AKC FSS, which is an optional record-keeping service for all purebred dogs not currently registrable with the AKC, breeds can compete in companion events and may enter into the Miscellaneous Class so long as they have 150 dogs with three-generation pedigrees. With AKC Recognition, the Danish-Swedish Farmdog is now eligible to compete in the Working Group at AKC Shows and Sports such as Agility, Barn Hunt, Flyball, Herding, Dock Diving, Lure Coursing, Obedience, Rally and Tracking.
The breed was developed to be versatile and serve many purposes – rat management, herding, hunting, serving as a watchdog and a family companion – they are definitely a do-it-all type of dog! Denmark and Sweden recognized them as an official breed in 1987. The first DSF was imported into the US in 1998 to establish a breeding program and the FCI Standard for the breed was officially published on March 26, 2009. In 2011 the breed joined the AKC Foundation Stock Services with the goal of eventually gaining full AKC recognition, which they have now achieved in 2025 and have been assigned to the Working Group.
Danish-Swedish Farmdogs are a small, compact breed with short and smooth coats that come in predominantly white with patches of brown, black, agouti, yellow, tan, or fawn. Their temperament is described as friendly and lively while also alert and attentive. They are a multipurpose breed that can enjoy being competitive in many different performance events. Despite their energy and athleticism, the breed is said to have a great off-switch, meaning they will happily settle down when you do. DSF are a mostly quiet breed aside from alert-barking.
