World Pet Obesity Week runs from October 7th to October 13th and aims to raise awareness regarding pet obesity, its causes, and its health risks. During this time, The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention (APOP) and The World Pet Obesity Association will conduct their biennial pet obesity prevalence survey. They will be collaborating with veterinary practices and teaching hospitals to collect and report the weight and body condition scores of cats, dogs, and for the first time, horses.
Nearly half of dog and cat owners believe their pets are a healthy weight, meanwhile, veterinary assessments reveal a different reality. A study done by APOP in 2022 estimated that 61% of cats and 59% of dogs are overweight or obese. This gap in understanding highlights a need for continued public education on the importance of proper pet nutrition and weight management.
Obesity in animals can lead to serious health issues including diabetes, heart disease, and joint issues which not only reduce an animal’s quality of life but also result in increased veterinary costs and emotional strain for pet owners. If owners can recognize the early signs of obesity – difficulty exercising, excessive weight around the abdomen – then more timely intervention can be implemented.
Regular veterinary assessments are crucial in addressing pet obesity. Routine check-ups that include a weight assessment can help pet owners stay informed about their animals’ health, Additionally, veterinary professionals can provide tailored dietary recommendations and exercise plans to get the animal back to a healthy weight.
