Here are three categories of advanced materials:
- Structural materials: These are materials that are used in engineering applications where strength, stiffness, and toughness are critical, such as aerospace, automotive, and construction industries. Examples of structural materials include composites, alloys, ceramics, and polymers.
- Functional materials: These are materials that have specific physical, electrical, magnetic, or optical properties that make them useful for specific applications. Examples of functional materials include semiconductors, superconductors, piezoelectric materials, and magnetostrictive materials.
Piezoelectric materials generate an electrical charge when they are mechanically deformed or stressed, and conversely, they can deform or bend when an electrical charge is applied to them. Some common examples include quartz, lead zirconate titanate (PZT), and certain types of ceramics and polymers. These devices are commonly used in applications such as powering wireless sensors and small electronics.
Magnetostrictive materials are materials that change their shape or dimensions when they are exposed to a magnetic field. This property arises from the interactions between the magnetic field and the intrinsic magnetic moments of the atoms in the material. Some common examples include iron, nickel, and certain types of alloys and compounds. These devices are used in applications such as power generation from sources of mechanical energy.
- Biomaterials: These are materials that are used in medical applications, such as implants, prosthetics, and drug delivery systems. Biomaterials can be synthetic or natural, and they must be biocompatible, non-toxic, and capable of integrating with biological tissues. Examples include metals, ceramics, polymers, and composite materials.
