Keep a Recruiter in Your Back Pocket

Your phone rings and it is a number you are
not familiar with. Is it a spam caller? Maybe or maybe not. Like most people, you probably let the call go to voicemail thinking they will leave a message if it is important. The caller left a voicemail so it must not have been a spam call. You listen to the voicemail and realize it was a
chemical recruiter wanting to discuss your background for a potential opportunity. To many candidates, this sequence is all too familiar. The question is, do you usually call back or answer the next call from the recruiter? Even if you are not actively searching for a job, you may still want to consider picking up the phone.

Celebrating Women’s History Month

March is Women’s History Month and we would like to celebrate the accomplishments of some amazing women who have made some major impacts not only in the chemical and materials industries.
Marie Sklodowska Curie: Some of her accomplishments include receiving two Nobel Prizes. The first in physics for discovering the phenomenon of radioactivity and the second in chemistry for the discovery of the radioactive elements polonium and radium.
Marie Skldowska Curie has inspired generations of women scientists. Read more here.
Frances Arnold: Her achievements include earning a Nobel Prize in chemistry for her discovery of methods used to direct the evolution of enzymes. Some of these enzymes have been used to produce environmentally friendly pharmaceuticals and renewable fuels.
Read more about Frances Arnold here.
Kathryn Hach-Darrow: Co-founder of Hach Chemical Company, her achievements include introducing chemistry to the field of water analysis as Hach Chemical could guarantee safe and clean drinking water. She pioneered a direct mail campaign to introduce the company’s technology all while raising a family. Read more about Kathryn Hach-Darrow here.

Paula Hammond: Her achievements are saving lives. Hammond found polymers that increase the amount of power held by cells and then created materials that recognize their own molecules. She co-founded the MIT Institute for Soldier Nanotechnology which is devoted to using scientific knowledge to make troops safer. This includes inventing a spray coating that helps blood clot almost instantly. Hammond is also a member of MIT’s Koch Institute for Integrative Cancer Research where she created polymers for drug delivery systems. Read more about Paula Hammond here.Stephanie Kwolek: The achievements of Kwolek are still being used today. She created the first family of synthetic fibers known for strength and stiffness. The best known is Kevlar which is used in protective vests, boats, airplanes, ropes, cables, and much more. Kwolek was inducted to the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 1994 and was only the fourth woman member of 113 at the time. She served as a mentor to other women scientists and participated in programs that introduced children to science. Read more about Stephanie Kwolec here.
